Bonnet and tailgate struts are the gas-filled cylinders that hold the hood in its place. Sadly, these struts generally have a life of only 3 to 5 years, post which they need replacement.
A common sign that shows that your struts need to be changed is when the hood suddenly closes and probably falls on your head while you are working under it. In other cases, fluids may start leaking from the struts.
